Bb Pilipinas last February 2011

The evening gown collection was provided by Cumbia, a boutique owned by Stella Marquez-Araneta of Bb. Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI). Hair and make-up were done by a team of David's Salon stylists.

Last Sunday marked another night of beauty and glamour as this year’s Binibining Pilipinas pageant showcased a new set of beautiful ladies vying for the crown and the right to represent the country internationally. Shamcey Supsup, a 24-year-old licensed architect, garnered the most prestigious title, making her the Philippines’ candidate for Ms Universe 2011. Dianne Necio made a memorable return by winning the title Bb. Pilipinas-International, while Isabella Manjon is the first Bb. Pilipinas-Tourism (the Bb. Pilipinas-World now has its own franchise). Janine Tugonon and Mary Jean Lastimosa were the first and second runners-up, respectively.

Many tuned in to see how these candidates matched their poise and grace to their intellect, but everyone had a question begging to be answered all night: what are the candidates going to wear? The evening gown competition is one of the most awaited segments of a pageant, so many held their breaths as the ladies walked onstage with regality and elegance. This year, we take a closer inspection at the beauties’ chosen garbs, along with the hair and makeup that finished off their outstanding looks.
Luzelle Felipe received the Best in Long Gown special award. While her dress was a few inches short, the deep jewel tone looked rich and elegant – perfect on her morena skin. The embellishments on the dress’ asymmetrical neckline put focus on her face, and the pulled back updo lent a clean shape that framed her features beautifully.

Second runner-up Mary Jean Lastimosa pulled off this kaleidoscopic printed dress by keeping her accessories to a minimum. Her smoky eyes and voluminous balanced the youthful vibe of this colorful number.

Janine Tugonon wore a draped peach dress with a glittery sweetheart neckline. The first runner-up looked divine in the pale color against her tan, but her sparkly earrings appeared to weigh down her delicate oval face.

Bb. Pilipinas-Tourism 2011 Isabelle Manjon carried herself well in this bold monochromatic dress. Her slick hair showed off her heart-shaped face, while her fuchsia lips added a pop of color without clashing with the bold character of her gown.

Diane Necio, who was last year’s first runner-up, successfully won the title Bb. Pilipinas-International 2011. She wore a halter dress in silver lamé. The restraint in styling of her hair and accessories balanced the intensity of her eye makeup but despite the simplicity, she was undoubtedly one of the few who stood out.

The beaded detailing and tulle train of Shamcey Supsup’s dress overwhelmed her frame, but she proved that her exotic beauty coupled with her intelligence would herald her Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 2011.

Last year’s Bb. Pilipinas title holders were also present to pass on the crown and the responsibility of representing the country in various opportunities here and abroad. Former Bb. Pilipinas-International Krista Kleiner wore an emerald dress that brightened her fair complexion. Bb. Pilipinas-World 2010 Czarina Gatbonton was garbed in one of the unexpected combinations of the night - a purple ombre dress. Venus Raj, former Bb. Pilipinas-Universe, was a sun-kissed goddess in her sheer tangerine dress but she received remarks of disapproval for her crimped hair.

While there were a bevy of ladies who showed style, there was a handful that was unable to achieve the look of a winning beauty queen. The beaded satin dresses may take a backseat for its intricately draped sheer counterparts to be in the limelight. The dresses this year are more diaphanous than the previous pageants have seen, and one would hope that Filipino designers be given the opportunity to showcase their talents in such competitions. It is also noteworthy that the hairstyles have evolved from being rigid updos to soft waves that enhance a beauty queen’s youthfulness. Filipinos all over want our culture and aesthetics to be represented well, but it is our intellect and depth that should be worth the highlight.
